Estate sales and downsizing in Sooke.
Sooke’s Sign Regulation Bylaw has a rule for garage sale signs: ones up to 0.3 square metres need no permit if they come down within two days after the sale. Garbage collection isn’t a municipal service, so residents arrange private providers. Our work in Sooke covers estate sales, online auctions, downsizing and clean-outs. Booking a free walkthrough is the first step.

Garbage, reuse and recycling in Sooke
Garbage collection isn’t a municipal service in Sooke, so residents and businesses arrange private providers. Recycling is a CRD service run by GFL. Sooke’s waste page also lists Repair Cafes and free Swap and Shop events at the Sooke Library, run through Zero Waste Sooke, as of November 2026.
Hartland, the CRD’s depot, takes furniture, mattresses and appliances, and the Beyond the Curb hubs in Colwood and Langford accept electronics, household batteries and light bulbs on weekends from 9am to 4pm (as of November 2026). Metchosin’s page names two Sooke operators, A&P Disposal and Recycling on Marilyn Road and Idlemore Recycle Centre on Idlemore Road, as places that take kitchen scraps, so call them about anything else.
Sale signs and donations from Sooke
Sooke’s Sign Regulation Bylaw defines a garage sale sign as a temporary sign an occupier of a residential property uses to advertise the sale of their own belongings from that property on a date set out on the sign. Those up to 0.3 sq m (3.2 sq ft) need no permit if they are removed within two days after the sale ends. Ask Sooke whether a sign for an estate sale fits that definition.
Beacon’s furniture pickup form says that for now there is no pickup from Sooke. Habitat for Humanity’s pickup page says Greater Victoria without naming municipalities, so confirm Sooke with the ReStore when you book. Its Westshore location, at 849 Orono Avenue, is in Langford.
Questions from Sooke
Do I need a permit for a garage sale sign in Sooke?
Sooke’s Sign Regulation Bylaw exempts garage sale signs up to 0.3 square metres from the permit requirement if they are removed within two days after the sale ends. It defines them as signs an occupier uses to advertise the sale of their own belongings from their home. Ask Sooke whether an estate sale sign fits that definition.
Where can furniture and mattresses from a Sooke house go?
Sooke doesn’t collect household garbage, so residents use private providers or the CRD’s Hartland depot. Beacon’s furniture pickup form says it doesn’t pick up from Sooke for now, and Habitat’s pickup page names only Greater Victoria. Since sales and donations come first, less of the house goes to the landfill.
What does it cost?
It depends on the house and what’s in it. After the free walkthrough you get a written estimate with every cost laid out, before you sign anything, and there’s no obligation.
