Estate sales and downsizing in Oak Bay.
Oak Bay has one of the oldest populations in Greater Victoria: about a third of residents are 65 or older, and most households live in single-detached houses. We run estate sales, online auctions, downsizing and clean-outs across Oak Bay, and handle the furniture, mattresses and appliances the District’s own depot doesn’t take. Every job starts with a free walkthrough.

What Oak Bay won’t take
The District collects garbage, organics and recycling every two weeks, with one 140-litre garbage tote per home. More garbage needs a second container from Public Works and five tickets at $0.75 each, as of November 2026. We found no bulky-item pickup on the District’s pages.
Oak Bay’s Drop Off Depot at 1771 Elgin Road is free for residents with a decal, but it doesn’t accept furniture, mattresses, wood, TVs, computer screens or towers, printers or tires. Those go to the CRD’s Hartland depot, to a charity that accepts them, or out with a clean-out.
Where a house’s contents can go
- Hartland depot, #1 Hartland Avenue: open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 7am to 5pm. Wooden furniture is its own stream at $110 per tonne plus a $10 bin fee and must be kept apart from garbage. Mattresses are $160 per tonne plus the bin fee. Large appliances, electronics and paint are free. (CRD rates as of November 2026.)
- Beyond the Curb, Oak Bay: a free CRD drop-off in the Cadboro Bay Road and Cranmore Road lot, weekends 9am to 4pm, for electronics, batteries, light bulbs, foam and flexible plastics.
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 721 Vanalman Avenue: takes clean, working furniture and electric appliances, and picks up large items in Greater Victoria for a $50 truck fee, booked a week ahead.
- Salvation Army Thrift Store: takes housewares, clothing, books and small appliances, but not furniture or mattresses, and doesn’t pick up.
Each charity decides what it accepts. That is why we sell and donate first, and only clear what nobody can use.
Holding a sale in Oak Bay
Oak Bay’s Sign Bylaw doesn’t mention estate or garage sales, but it bans signs on boulevards, trees, poles and other public structures. The Garagellenium, Oak Bay’s big community garage sale day each summer, is organised by an independent group, not the District.
If you’d rather not have buyers in the house at all, an online auction keeps them out until a supervised pickup.
Questions from Oak Bay
Does Oak Bay pick up furniture or mattresses?
We found no bulky-item pickup on the District’s pages, and the Oak Bay depot on Elgin Road doesn’t take furniture or mattresses. They go to the CRD’s Hartland depot, to a charity that accepts them, or out with a clean-out. We sell and donate first, so less of the house ends up at Hartland.
Can I hold an estate sale in Oak Bay?
Yes, and we run them in Oak Bay homes. The Sign Bylaw doesn’t mention estate sales, but signs can’t go on boulevards, trees, poles or other public structures. If you’d rather not have buyers in the house, an online auction keeps them out until a supervised pickup.
Which parts of Oak Bay do you cover?
All of it, from Uplands to South Oak Bay, and the rest of Greater Victoria. Every job starts with a free walkthrough at the house, and you get a written estimate before you sign anything.
What does it cost?
It depends on the house and what’s in it. After the free walkthrough you get a written estimate with every cost laid out, before you sign anything, and there’s no obligation.
