How we help in Sidney

Weekly pickup, one small can

Sidney’s curbside garbage and kitchen organics are collected weekly by the Town’s contractor, Emterra Environmental. Each dwelling can put out one garbage can or bag of up to 80 litres and 20 kg, and the Town doesn’t supply cans. Extra volume stickers are $8.00 per extra bag or can, sold at Town Hall or Thrifty Foods Sidney, as of November 2026. Yard waste has its own curbside collection, up to three cans or compostable bags of 80 litres and 20 kg each, with extra stickers at $6.25 as of November 2026.

The Town’s pages list no bulky-item pickup, so a sofa or a mattress needs another route: Hartland, a charity, or a clean-out.

Depots and donations on the Peninsula

  • Sidney Return-It Depot, #5-10025 Galaran Road: takes end-of-life electronics Tuesday to Saturday 9:30am to 4:30pm, closed Sunday and Monday, as of November 2026.
  • Pacific Mobile Depot: the Town’s page lists a monthly drop-off on the Saanich Peninsula and residential pickup. For yard waste it also lists DL’s Recycling Centre, 6844 Oldfield Road in Saanichton, and Peninsula Landscape Supplies, 2078 Henry Avenue.
  • Beacon Community Services, 9760 Fourth Street (Thrift on Fourth): where furniture and electronics are bought and donated, and closed Sundays. Donations are taken Monday to Saturday 9am to 4:45pm, as of November 2026. Beacon declines beds and mattresses, takes working small appliances, TVs and some computer equipment, and runs a furniture-only pickup form.
  • St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP), 9839 Fifth Street: a new location, open Mondays through Saturdays from 9:30am to 4pm (as of November 2026). It wants newer flat-screen TVs and DVD or Blu-ray players in excellent working order, plus tools, linens and household goods, while its cannot-resell list names large furniture and mattresses.

Downsizing and sale rules

Sidney’s Sign Bylaw 2058 and Zoning Bylaw 2275 have no garage sale clause that we found, so ask the Town about any sale sign before you put one up. If the house is being emptied for a move to a smaller home or into care, downsizing support covers the keep, gift and sell decisions, and moving plans cover the floor plan, the movers and the set-up at the new place.

Questions from Sidney

What size garbage can does Sidney allow?

Each dwelling can put out one garbage can or bag of up to 80 litres and 20 kg for the weekly collection, and the Town doesn’t supply cans. Extra volume stickers are $8.00 per extra bag or can (as of November 2026). Furniture and mattresses won’t fit, so a sofa or a bed needs Hartland, a charity or a clean-out.

Where can I take electronics and old appliances in Sidney?

The Sidney Return-It Depot at #5-10025 Galaran Road takes end-of-life electronics, Tuesday to Saturday 9:30am to 4:30pm (as of November 2026). Beacon’s Thrift on Fourth, 9760 Fourth Street, lists working small appliances and TVs among what it accepts. Large appliances are free at Hartland, as of November 2026.

Does Beacon pick up furniture in Sidney?

Beacon’s furniture pickup form doesn’t list Sidney among the places it can’t pick up from, and its Sidney shop at 9760 Fourth Street takes furniture donations Monday to Saturday (as of November 2026). Pickup is for furniture only, the driver decides after seeing the items, and the shop doesn’t take beds or mattresses. St. Vincent de Paul’s Sidney store wants small furniture, not large pieces.

What does it cost?

It depends on the house and what’s in it. After the free walkthrough you get a written estimate with every cost laid out, before you sign anything, and there’s no obligation.
